The Split Racer was one of my first designs created exclusively for 3D printing. It taught me a lot about the 3D printing technology, layout, and limitations.
In these early prototypes printings, I think some of my early ideas are clearly demonstrated. I wanted a small vehicle that was barely bigger than its driver, a small motorcycle like vehicle that could come out of the center as an escape vehicle. I also wanted the front wheels to turn together and the driver’s seat to lift up like an ejection seat as the motorcycle exits the vehicle.
Some of the ideas proved too difficult, if not impossible, to print using the 3D printer I had available to me at the time. So I changed the design to be something more practical. I also played with the idea of having snap-on hubcaps that would act as a binding point to keep the wheels on their axles.
